Dave Franco is making his own way in Hollywood, and this summer alone, we’ll see him in two blockbusters.
The 28-year-old is learning how to handle all the fame that comes with being in such high-profile comedies.
It’s obviously very flattering, and the fact that I’m getting recognized a bit more is technically a good thing. [But] I still have a freak-out moment every few months where I take a step back and question if this is the lifestyle that I really want to lead for the rest of my life.
Here’s what you need to know about the rising star who is entertaining audiences with each new role.
1. He’s Dating Alison Brie
The Mad Men actress has been with Franco for two years, but they are not vocal about their relationship. The couple posted the above video, “Dream Girl,” on Funny or Die,
The actress, 31, posted this backstage picture from Of Mice and Men, which James is starring in on Broadway. In the shot, she is posed next to Dave, and they are surrounded by Neighbors cast members including Zac Efron, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Seth Rogen and his wife, Lauren Miller.

In February, the pair was photographed together arriving at a Milan airport.

2. He Tries Not to Be Known as James’ Little Brother
Although it was James’ manager who coerced him into taking a theater class when he was a sophomore at USC, Dave tries to separate himself from his older brother’s career.
He told Interview magazine, “I made a conscious decision to distance myself from him work-wise. As much as I love him and respect him, I needed to stand on my own two feet.”
He does acknowledge that James did help him break into the industry.
In an interview with movie fone, he said:
He helped me get a manager, which I don’t take for granted. It’s tough to get representation, let alone really good representation that cares about you. But from there on out, no one is going to hire me just because I’m James Franco’s little brother.
However, he also discussed that, in the beginning, when he was failing at auditions, being James’ brother was actually a detriment.
“Because of my last name, people were paying more attention to me and were actually remembering that I was so horrible,”
In fact, Dave told Next Movie that he spent his first Hollywood paycheck on his mom.
“I think my first big purchase was actually for my mom. She had one of those ’90s TVs in her living room that’s like a 10×10 brick, so I purchased her a flatscreen for her living room,” he said.
3. He Was Told He Has an ‘A**Hole Face’
Franco realizes that he is frequently cast as the jerk.
Here are some examples. On Scrubs he played Cole, a snotty, rich medical student.
In 21 Jump Street, he was popular high schooler Eric, who sold drugs on the side.
In an interview with GQ, he talked about the fact that he seems to always play the guy audiences love to hate.
“Once I was complaining about it to someone, and they said, ‘It’s because you have an asshole face.’ I was like, ‘Um, thank you. Thank you very much,'” he told the magazine.
He tries not to give this distressing fact too much thought. “Oh man, I’ve stopped trying to analyze it, because it makes me upset,” he said.
4. He Feels That His Funny or Die Videos Show Who He Really Is
Franco has made tons of videos for Funny or Die, which are, at times, pretty shocking.
In the one above, he has sex with himself after a girl tells him, “Go F**” yourself!”
My friend who’s directing it put his shirt over his head, he just couldn’t take it, and I was like, ‘Dude, if I’m fucking doing this, you’re fucking watching me!’
Franco thinks that these videos showcase who is truly is.
He told Interview:
On a much smaller scale, I think these videos are an accurate representation of who I am. As weird as they may be, I’m at least proud of them, and it showed that I do have a slightly different voice. I can’t tell you how often people bring up these videos in interviews, and I’m so happy to talk about them because we created them from the ground up.
5. His Cats Are Brothers Named Harry & Arturo
“I’m the weird cat guy, for sure,” he told People magazine. “I guess I realized that I’m the weird cat guy when I don’t see someone for awhile and the first thing they ask me, is, ‘How’ve you been?’ And then literally the second question is always, ‘How are your cats?’ That’s not normal.’
Many interviewers do ask the actor about his furry friends.
On the Ellen Show, Degeneres pointed out that they share an affection for the animals.
The interview was complete with photos and video of his pets, shown above.
It caused Franco to gush:
I come home and I just find them in the most compromising positions. I fall with 34 pounds of cat on me every night.
The Francos in general love cats. In fact, Dave spoke to People about how their house becomes a haven for the animals.
Over the holidays, I brought my two cats home and my mom has two cats and James brought his two cats Sammy and Zelda home, so we had six cats in one house, which we found out is actually illegal. So if the Franco family wasn’t weird enough, add six cats on top of that.
Zac Efron hits theaters as a hard-partying frat boy in Neighbors, out on May 9. In his first R-rated comedy, the 26-year-old continues to charm audiences.Click here to read more
