Kendrick Lamar is one of the most famous rappers around. With hits like King Kunta, Swimming Pools, Money Trees, Sing About Me, and The Blacker the Berry, the artist has scored a number of accolades over the course of his career. But have these successes boosted his income? How much money does the rapper make?
According to Forbes, Lamar has an estimated net worth of $18.5 million. What, specifically, does he spend his money on? Where does the artist stand compared to other rappers?
Read on for details.
1. He’s Ranked as the 9th Highest-Paid Hip-Hop Act of 2016
In 2013, Forbes reported that Lamar had an estimated net worth of $9 million. This year, the same site reported that his net worth has risen to $18.5 million.
In 2015, Forbes explained that Lamar’s income of $12 million pretax sits below other top tier entertainers, like Nicki Minaj (with $21 in 2015) and Drake (with $39.5 in 2015). They wrote that his hesitation to endorse products and diversify “means his paycheck remains measured.” In 2014, Lamar told the outlet, “All money ain’t good money”, and said that making music matters more to him than building businesses.
2. His Album ‘Untitled Unmastered’ Debuted Atop the US Billboard 200
Lamar’s hit album, untitled unmastered., has certainly contributed to his net worth. The compilation was released by Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records this year, and received critical acclaim from critics, debuting atop the US Billboard 200. The album contains eight untitled tracks without a specific release date– instead, the songs were released on Spotify on March 4, 2016. Later that day, they became available on the iTunes Store. Pitchfork writes that the project was intended as the follow-up to Lamar’s 2015 album, To Pimp a Butterfly, and featured artists like Bilal, Snoop Dogg, and Pharrell Williams. It sold 324,000 copies in its first week. Hopes and Fears writes that Lamar made between $921,600 and $1,290,240 in the first 24 hours after releasing the album.
3. He Partnered With Reebok in 2014
Lamar does not often partner with brands or companies, but in 2014, he was named as Reebok’s new brand ambassador. He created a three and a half minute film for the company, directed by Anthony Mandler, who had previously worked on music videos for Rihanna and Jay Z, according to MTV.com. In the video (shown above) Lamar debuts the Ventilator OG sneaker in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Ventilator line. In a statement, Lamar said:
Reebok has a history of helping kids in the community realize their potential is limitless. I saw what the brand was doing, and I wanted to be a part of it and make it even stronger. It’s as simple as that. Kids that listen to my music are looking for inspiration. It’s important that I continue that message in anything I represent.”
Unlike many top-tier performers, Lamar has also avoided endorsing or starting his own liquor company. Forbes writes, “He is more likely to be in the studio than being paid for nightclub appearances, and you won’t find his social media feeds clogged with promotional tweets.” The 29-year-old once told the outlet, “I rap because I know I serve a better purpose as far as making people feel good about themselves.”
4.He Paid Under $600,000 for His Home
According to BET, Lamar paid $523,500 for the 4-bedroom home he bought in Eastvale, California in 2014. Both BET and The Huffington Post wrote that the purchase seemed modest in comparison to what fellow rappers have spent on their homes (Rick Ross, for example, dropped $5.8 for his mansion in Georgia, while Drake bought a $9 million Hollywood Hills home with a tennis court, volleyball court, and horseback riding arena.) BET added on, “A modest price tag isn’t the only thing unconventional about Lamar’s new digs, so is the location. Eastvale isn’t well known like the Beverly Hills, Brentwood and Calabasas neighborhoods celebrities tend to flock to. The city sits a full hour outside of Los Angeles, with a population of less than 60,000 people.”
5. He Has Won 7 Grammy Awards
Lamar has won 40 awards over the course of his career, including 7 Grammys and the ASCAP Vanguard Award for his work as a music composer. At the 2014 Grammys, the rapper earned a total of seven nominations at the Grammys, and in 2015, he won the categories of Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance with the song i.
At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, held on February 15, 2016, Lamar received 11 nominations, and became the rapper with the most nominations in a single night. He ended up winning five awards, including Best Rap Album for To Pimp a Butterfly, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Alright”, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “These Walls”.
