Since Supergirl is taking the holidays off, The CW is providing viewers with flying reindeer instead. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, an animated special based on the hit novelty song, will air on Monday, December 12 at 8 p.m. ET. Read on for a preview of the special.
Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is based on the 1979 song of the same name. It was written by Randy Brooks and first performed by Elmo and Patsy Shropshire. It’s about a grandmother who had too much eggnog and forgot to take her medication, but still went out into a snowstorm. Unfortunately, Grandma gets run over by Santa Claus’ reindeer.
The song became an hour-long animated special in 2000, debuting on The WB, which is now The CW. It was directed by Phil Roman, an animation veteran who worked on How The Grinch Stole Christmas!. Elmo Shropshire was recruited to be the narrator.
The story centers on Jake Spankenheimer, who tries to find his grandma and wants to stop Cousin Mel from using grandma’s disappearance to turn Santa into a villain. She really hates Christmas, but Jake is a true believer in Santa.
