A Charlie Brown Christmas debuted on CBS on December 9, 1965 and celebrates its 51st anniversary this year. Charles M. Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, wrote the special. It was directed by animation legend Bill Melendez, whose career began with Walt Disney. Lee Mendelson produced the special, along with every Peanuts special since A Charlie Brown Christmas. It has aired every single year since 1965, and switch to ABC in 2001.
The plot finds Charlie Brown sad, even though the Christmas season is here. Lucy then suggests that he direct a Christmas play at school, but his friends refuse to be cooperative. When Charlie Brown brings a tiny Christmas tree to school, he is made fun of and wonders if anyone really knows what Christmas is all about. That’s when Linus delivers his famous reading from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 2, verses 8-14 and tells Charlie Brown that that’s what Christmas is all about.
A Charlie Brown Christmas was the first Mendelson/Melendez Peanuts special to air. It was later followed by dozens of classics, including It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
After A Charlie Brown Christmas, ABC will air Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales.
