Ed Sheeran is engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn. He made the announcement on Instagram on January 20.
“Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well,” Sheeran wrote.
The two were friends before they started dating, and Sheeran has been vocal in his appreciation for Seaborn as an artistic muse, but more importantly, as the reason why he’s “never been happier,” according to People Magazine.
“I’ve never been more comfortable. I’ve never been more inspired. I feel like everything’s fallen into place, and it’s fallen into place because I’ve given it the time to fall into place,” Sheeran told the outlet.
Here is what you need to know:
1. She & Sheeran Met in High School
Seaborn and Sheeran both attended Thomas Mills High School in Framingham, Suffolk. According to The Indian Express, the singer had a crush on Seaborn, who was a year younger, but felt he wasn’t “cool” enough to make a move. Still, a former school friend said that “there was always something there between them. Ed had a crush on Cherry at school, but she had a boyfriend then… Cherry is definitely his type.”
The pair stayed in touch after graduating school, but rumors of a relationship didn’t begin until 2015, when they were seen together at a baseball game in New York City.
Seaborn and Sheeran had a long distance relationship for the better part of a year, before deciding that their relationship was the real deal.
“This has been the first time I’ve actually had the time to fall in love properly,” Sheeran told Zane Lowe in a Beats 1 Radio interview.
2. She Was the Reason Sheeran Took a Year off
After releasing the critically and commercially successful album x (or Multiply) in 2014, Sheeran decided to focus less on his career and more on his personal life with Seaborn. He told Zane Lowe that “the catalyst of taking a year off was also the fact that my partner quit her job in New York– which she’s now got back in London, which really cool– but we were just basically like, let’s quit our jobs and have a year of forming a tight bond. So we went traveling and spent every day for a year together.”
During this time, Sheeran’s public appearances were limited, he quit his social media, and it was clear that his attention was wholly focused on strengthening his relationship.
“I’ve probably had three days apart from her in the last year… but we’re very, very strong,” he explained. You can watch the full Zane Lowe interview in the video above.
3. She Works as an Advisory Consultant
Seaborn worked as an Advisory Consultant for Deloitte & Touche LLP in New York. According to their website, Deloitte is an organization with “more than 225,000 people in 150 countries, providing audit, tax, legal, financial advisory, enterprise, risk, and consulting services.”
After quitting the position to travel, Seaborn now works as a senior advisory consultant at Deloitte in London, so that she can be closer to Sheeran. She has held this position since 2016.
According to her LinkedIn page, her duties are very similar to the ones she had in New York, including audit, tax, and enterprise-based business.
4. She Played Hockey in College
Seaborn went to Durham University in the United Kingdom, where she was a star hockey player. According to the GoDuke website, Seaborn led the team to a runner-up finish in the Investec English Woman’s Hockey League for two consecutive seasons and was selected to play for England’s Under-18 national team, where earned both Bronze and Silver medals.
Seaborn also led the hockey team to two British University Championships in 2012 and 2013.
Seaborn continues to play hockey for the Chelmsford Hockey Club in Essex, England. According to BBC News, Sheeran frequently attends games. After attending a game last February, Sheeran posed for photos with fans. Check out one of the shots below.
5. She Inspired Multiple Songs on ‘Divide’
Sheeran has played coy with regards to the inspiration of his newest album, but for most everyone listening, its obvious that his love for Seaborn is present on several tracks. Lead single “Shape of You” is the one most have pointed to as a prime example, as the song finds Sheeran listing the ways he loves “her.” The lyrics “we talk for hours and hours about the sweet and the sour/And how your family is doing okay,” is another indication that it is Seaborn, given that Sheeran has known her family since he was just a boy.
Other tracks like “Perfect,” and “Hearts Don’t Break Around Here” also have fans all but certain that Sheeran is referring to Seaborn:
“She is the sweetest thing that I know/should see the way she holds me when the lights go low/shakes my soul like a pothole every time.”
