José Azócar: Breaking News

Azocar elected to become a free agent Friday, Grant McAuley of the Marietta Daily Journal reports. It's the second time this month that Azocar chose free agency after clearing waivers following his removal from Atlanta's 40-man roster. He re-signed on a minor-league contract the last time and could do so again.

Atlanta designated Azocar for assignment Wednesday. Atlanta reinstated Eli White (concussion) from the 7-day injured list, with Azocar giving up his spot on the active roster to facilitate the move. Azocar has logged 16 plate appearances with Atlanta on the season, slashing .333/.375/.467 with a stolen base and a run.

Atlanta selected Azocar's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. The 30-year-old outfielder elected free agency after being designated for assignment by Atlanta last week, but he quickly re-signed on a minor-league deal and is now back in the majors. Azocar went 0-for-2 with a stolen base in two games during his prior stay on the big-league roster. He'll provide outfield depth with Ronald Acuna (hamstring) and Eli White (concussion) on the injured list but isn't likely to see regular playing time.
