José Azócar: Breaking News

Atlanta selected Azocar's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. Azocar will provide Atlanta with some extra coverage in the outfield after Ronald Acuna (hamstring) was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move, but the former isn't expected to see steady at-bats while he's up with the parent club. Instead, Azocar is likely to see most of his usage as a late-inning defensive replacement or pinch runner. The 29-year-old had been handling an everyday role at Gwinnett, slashing .270/.348/.420 with two home runs and eight stolen bases over 113 plate appearances.

Atlanta reassigned Azocar to minor-league camp Friday. After he was unable to win a reserve outfield spot on Atlanta's Opening Day roster, Azocar is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett. The 29-year-old previously logged 21 plate appearances in the majors between Atlanta and the Mets in 2025, slashing .263/.333/.263.

Azocar signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Aram Leighton of JustBaseball.com reports. Azocar spent time with both Atlanta and the Mets in 2025 but made just 21 plate appearances in the majors, going 5-for-19 with an RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base. The 29-year-old outfielder will get another chance to carve out a role for himself in Atlanta, though his subpar hitting skills will force him to rely on his glove to make the big-league roster.
