Giannis Antetokounmpo was one of the biggest headlines of the NBA offseason. After years of deliberation, the Milwaukee Bucks finally parted ways with their longtime superstar. On June 22, it was announced that Antetokounmpo would be part of a monster-trade, sending him to the Miami Heat.

Antetokounmpo’s acquisition can now be added to the long list of Pat Riley’s incredible accomplishments as their team president. As great of a coach as Riley was, the basketball world could argue he’s been a better executive. From bringing in Lebron James and Chris Bosh to managing Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal, Riley’s resume stacks up against the greatest to ever do it.

Although Antetokounmpo has officially become a member of the Heat, it doesn’t mean Riley’s job of caring for his new superstar is over. On the contrary, Riley understands the way you treat your players can go a long way. From winning championships to future negotiations to luring other talent, every action Riley takes with Antetokounmpo is under a microscope.

Pat Riley Impresses Giannis Antetokounmpo This Offseason

That’s why the unreal personal gesture Riley showed the “Greek Freak” will likely have a long-lasting impact on their relationship. During an appearance on his brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo’s podcast, “ThanalysisShow”, (Giannis) Antetokounmpo revealed Riley’s amazing gesture.

“It’s not how they interact with me but how they interact with my circle/people…he (Pat) was respectful and spent time with every single person…because he came all the way to Greece and to the court we grew up playing. He worked out with me and he spent time with everybody in the gym so I was like ‘oh wow’,” Antetokounmpo said.

Riley’s intentions can’t be measured, but traveling all the way to Greece, to make sure your new superstar knows you care about their loved ones, can’t hurt the chances Antetokounmpo sings with the Heat long-term.

Riley’s Gesture Could Keep Antetokounmpo in Miami

Following the trade, Antetokounmpo will remain under contract with the Heat through at least the end of the 2026-27 NBA season. He has a $62.7 million player-option ahead of the 2027-28 NBA season, so there’s no guarantee Antetokounmpo will stay in Miami beyond this season.

After playing his first 13 seasons with the Bucks, Antetokounmpo was sent to the Heat in exchange for a haul of players and draft picks. Bobby Portis Jr. joined Antetokounmpo in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a second-round pick, and a pick-swap.

Antetokounmpo will look to add another NBA championship to his trophy case. During his time with the Bucks, he won one NBA title, leading his team to the playoffs nine times. Rumors had long swirled around the idea of him and the Bucks parting ways. Multiple reports stated he was unhappy with the franchise’s lack of effort toward winning.

Antetokounmpo has built a Hall-of-Fame resume throughout his time in the league. The 10-time NBA All-Star continued to put up dominant numbers in his final season with the Bucks. He averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 0.9 blocks, and 0.7 steals per game. The main concern with Antetokounmpo at this point in his career is his health.

He only played in 36 games last season, and has only played more than 67 games one time since the 2018-19 NBA season. At 31 years old, there should be a lot of basketball left ahead of him, but only time will tell if the blockbuster trade was worth it for the Heat. No matter what happens, it’s clear Riley will do everything in his power to keep Antetokounmpo in a Heat jersey.
