Quarterback Trey Lance didn’t have the best start of his career, as he finds himself on his third team as he enters his fifth professional season.

Lance signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers to fight for the backup quarterback position and sit behind Justin Herbert. The former 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is currently in a position battle with Taylor Heinicke to become QB2.

Throughout the 2025 NFL Preseason, Trey Lance has been having some impressive showings during the snaps he has received. The former North Dakota State Bison has appeared in all 3 of the Bolts’ preseason games, throwing for 296 passing yards and 2 touchdowns.

Heinicke has 64 passing yards and 19 rushing yards in the two preseason games he has appeared in. Heinicke started 15 games in the 2021-22 season, where he threw for 3,419 yards and 20 touchdowns, proving he can be a quality backup.

With one preseason game remaining, Lance shares his goals for what he wants to achieve with the Chargers.

With the regular season just a few weeks away, the Los Angeles Chargers will have to decide who will be sitting behind Justin Herbert.

While Trey Lance has had some good outings, he is still trying to cement himself as QB2. Lance joined the Chargers’ weekly podcast and discussed his goals with Los Angeles.

“One day at a time, one goal at a time. For me, the first thing is just to be able to be the 2. That’s goal number 1,” Lance said. “If I can check that one off, then just continue to take steps learning in my career. Like I said, Justin’s a great person to learn from…”

“Since I’ve signed, since I’ve been here throughout training camp, it’s still my mindset. I just want to use this as a stepping stone, whatever that looks like, Lance added. “If I get to play a game or a few games, great. If not, just find ways to continue to get better.”

Herbert has been a healthy player throughout his time in the NFL, but he has missed four games in his career. If Herbert does suffer an injury, Lance has the opportunity to revitalize his career with a good outing.

Another Chance For Lance

Trey Lance hasn’t lived up to the potential of the 3rd overall pick. As he said, being in LA is a stepping stone for his career.

There aren’t as many eyes focusing on him as in his rookie season. Lance is only 25 years old and still has much of his career to look forward to.

Lance is set to start the Bolts’ final preseason game before entering the regular season. He can use the game to show the coaching staff that he should be QB2.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has liked what he’s seen from the player, calling him impressive, which can be a possible hint for Lance being the team’s backup.
