Jefferson's so-called pole position prior to training camp may not mean much, as he'll face competition not only from the aforementioned veterans but also 2024 third-round pick Roman Wilson and 2023 third-rounder Calvin Austin. It looks like a wide-open competition for snaps/roles behind runaway No. 1 receiver George Pickens.

Sutton has been suspended the first eight games of the 2024 regular season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Sutton's suspension relates to a March incident in which he was charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic battery. The veteran cornerback, who previously played for the Steelers from 2017 through 2022 before a one-year stint with Detroit last season, will be eligible for reinstatement after Pittsburgh's game against the Giants in Week 8. Once reinstated, he could mix in as a rotational player in the Steelers secondary.
Wilson remains the clear favorite to start Week 1 under center for Pittsburgh and has made a good impression on his new coaching staff throughout OTAs and June minicamp, Chris Ward of SteelersNow.com reports. Wilson has impressed with arm talent and leadership throughout spring activities, per Mark Kaboldy of The Athletic, and he's reportedly dominated first-team reps to this point. Justin Fields could push for more opportunities during training camp, but for the time being, there's been nothing to suggest any shift from coach Mike Tomlin's remark early in the offseason that Wilson is in the "pole position" to start Week 1 under center. Experience and consistency alone could make enough difference for Wilson, a 35-year-old veteran, to win the starting gig over Fields, but he'll face pressure to keep Pittsburgh in the playoff race, given that he's playing on only a one-year contract.
Copeland agreed to a deal with Steelers on Friday. Copeland spent some time on the Steelers' practice squad during his rookie campaign before signing a reserve/future deal with the Chiefs following the season. He was ultimately cut by the team in May and has now found a fresh start in Pittsburgh. He will compete with a plethora of pass catchers for a depth receiving role in the upcoming season.
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said at mandatory minicamp Wednesday that he "failed" to put Fitzpatrick "in the best position" during the 2023 season and intends for him to play more at free safety going forward, Joe Clark of Steelers Depot reports. Fizpatrick played a career-high 134 snaps in the slot last season despite appearing in just 10 games, per Clark, and his 161 snaps at box safety were the second-highest tally of his career. That heavily intruded on Fitzpatrick's ability to suit up at free safety, where his talents best shine, resulting in his first year without a single turnover. Fitzpatrick said he hopes to get back to playing "Minkah Ball" in 2024, and getting the 2018 first-round pick back to a deep safety role could allow him to return to his four-time Pro Bowler form. The addition of DeShon Elliott in free agency should facilitate that plan.
Head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Wednesday that Holcomb (knee) is on track to be ready for training camp, Nick Farabaugh of Steelers Now reports. There was speculation earlier this offseason that Holcomb's knee injury was severe enough to force the 27-year-old linebacker to medically retire, but it seems like he'll be able to return to the field after all. Holcomb appeared in eight games before sustaining his season-ending injury in 2023, recording 54 total tackles, including four tackles for loss, while also tallying two passes defended and two forced fumbles. He's expected to retain a substantial role in the Steelers' linebacker corps once he moves past his knee issue.
Sutton is signing with the Steelers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. He previously spent six years with the Steelers after they drafted him in the third round in 2017. Sutton signed a three-year contract with the Lions last offseason and started all 17 games, but he was frequently picked on by quarterbacks and later released in March amidst reports of a warrant being out for his arrest. Sutton eventually turned himself in to Florida police and was charged with a misdemeanor count of domestic battery.
Barcoo (undisclosed) reverted to injured reserve Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Barcoo will now remain on the shelf for the 2024 campaign unless he reaches an injury settlement with the team.
