Johnston agreed to terms Tuesday on a contract with the Steelers. Johnston finished the 2025 season with the Giants' practice squad after being waived from the Bills due to a foot injury he sustained in late September. Now healthy, Johnston looks to contribute to the Steelers' special teams unit on a one-year deal.
The Giants elevated Johnston from their practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's matchup versus the Commanders, Dan Salomone of the team's official site reports. Johnston will have a chance to make his debut with the team after signing with them earlier in the week. The 33-year-old could be in line to handle punting duties, as Jamie Gillan is listed as doubtful due to a knee injury.
Johnston (foot) is set to sign with the Giants, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. It's a practice-squad contract, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic. Johnston punted for the Bills in Weeks 2 through 4 before suffering a foot injury and landing on IR. He ultimately was waived with an injury settlement and hadn't found a new team until Tuesday. The Giants signed Johnston after putting him through a workout, so the team clearly feels the foot issue is a thing of the past. According to Raanan, New York's regular punter, Jamie Gillan, is nursing an undisclosed injury and is uncertain to play Sunday against Washington, which explains why the team is bringing Johnston aboard.
