The Detroit Red Wings are still looking for their next general manager and could potentially hire the Detroit Tigers’ general manager.
The Red Wings and former general manager Steve Yzerman concluded on July 15 that Yzerman would leave his job as the Red Wings’ GM and move into a senior advisor role for the franchise instead.
Detroit recently hired a law firm to help them find the next Red Wings’ general manager, and it’s possible that they could look across town and hire the Tigers’ GM to fill the role.
Red Wings Looking at Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, while speaking on NHL Tonight, the Red Wings are now connected to hiring Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg.
“(The new Red Wings GM) might not necessarily be a traditional ‘hockey person’ as we’ve come to define them. It might be different,” Friedman said.
“There’s one name I want to mention cause I don’t think it’s been out there a lot. It’s a person with a bit of a different background. His name is Jeff Greenberg. He’s the general manager of the Detroit Tigers. Jeff Greenberg worked for the Chicago Blackhawks a few years ago. I think it’s wrong to say anybody is a lead contender or anybody’s got the inside track. But I do think that he’s somebody who’s already in the organization who they have some interest in, and I think if he’s interested in the job, it will be a factor, although I want to make it very clear, I’m not saying he’s not the favorite or anything like that. But he’s a name I haven’t heard a lot about who will be part of this search if he’s interested in the job.”
Looking at Jeff Greenberg
Greenberg has a long background in professional sports. He played hockey in his younger days before interning for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks of MLB. He then worked for the Chicago Cubs from 2012 to 2022, being promoted to assistant GM in 2020.
Then, in 2022, he worked with the Chicago Blackhawks as an associate GM before returning to MLB in 2023 as the general manager of the Detroit Tigers.
Given how much experience Greenberg has in professional sports, both in MLB and in the NHL, he is an extremely intriguing hire for the Red Wings, who are said to be open-minded as to who they hire as the team’s next general manager after missing the playoffs for the past decade.
After the failed tenure of Yzerman in Detroit, the franchise is clearly being extremely open to whom they bring in, as Greenberg has far more experience in baseball than in hockey. But the fact that he has worked for the Blackhawks before as an associate general manager shows that he does have high-level experience working in an NHL front office, too, so he would be a very intriguing candidate if the Red Wings decided to think a bit outside the box and bring in someone who is more known for being a baseball guy.
