Lifetime‘s latest movie is appropriately debuting on Halloween weekend. The film is Amish Witches: The True Story of Holmes County, which debuts on Saturday, October 29. Read on for a preview of the film and to learn when it starts.
Although the film has “true story” right in the title, it’s not based on a specific true story. Instead, it’s about a reality TV crew that visits Holmes County, Ohio, home to the largest Amish community in the world. They are hired by a group of young women to film bizarre events happening in the county after a woman who claimed to be a witch dies.
What is true is that Amish Witches is inspired by stories of witches in the Amish community. In particular, the film appears to be based on the story of the Chesterfield Ghost, who was a 15-year-old girl branded a witch hundreds of years ago for challenging authority. When she died, the village elders buried her at night and planted a large tree above her so her soul couldn’t escape.
Amish Witches is also produced by Hot Snakes Media. As Amish365.com points out, this is the same company behind Amish Mafia, Amish Haunting and Breaking Amish. They have a thing for turning Amish life into profit.
After Amish Witches debuts, Lifetime will air the hour-long The Real Amish Witches, a documentary about the people who inspired the film.
