The Wolfman

It’s time to take some movies home, my friends – it’s a miracle and a wonder that modern technology lets us take something that occupies multiple reels of fragile film stock and condense it down onto a shiny silver disc, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the Insane Clown Posse, it’s that we shouldn’t screw with miracles. Here’s the major movies hitting home video this week.

The WolfmanBenicio Del Toro stars in this reboot of the Universal movie monster franchise as Lawrence Talbot, an English nobleman who returns home after the death of his brother to learn of a horrible curse. When his estranged father enters the picture, Larry finds out that lycanthropy is a family affair after all. Although some critics panned it, I thought it was a pretty enjoyable take on the classic concept. Read our review or watch the trailer.

Alice In WonderlandTim Burton‘s take on the Lewis Carroll classic was a box-office smash, raking in a pile of cash big enough to beat Avatar for the biggest 3D opening in movie history. I wasn’t too enthralled by it – too much CGI effects tacked on to too little story, with an infuriatingly mincing performance from Johnny Depp on top of it, but Mia Wasikowska is an appealing Alice and it’s certainly something to look at if you’re bonged out. Watch the trailer.

Life – This BBC documentary is truly epic, filmed over the course of three thousand days in locations all over the world. Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, it contains 130 individual stories of animals and plants and how they survive in this wacky zany ecosystem we call home. Watch a clip.

Tony Manero – Your left-field choice of the week, this Chile/Brazil co-production is about a petty thug in Santiago, Chile obsessed with Saturday Night Fever and John Travolta’s disco lizard character therein. But when the movie stops playing, our man goes off the rails and his quest to be like Tony starts controlling his life. Watch the trailer.
