The Royals optioned Black to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. Black turned in four scoreless relief appearances after being promoted, but despite that he finds himself headed back to the minors. Stephen Kolek (oblique) is back from the injured list to take Black's roster spot.

Mason Black: Breaking News
Called up Sunday
The Royals recalled Black from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. Black was unable to crack Kansas City's Opening Day roster but will now get a look in the big-league bullpen. The 26-year-old has a 3.86 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 6:5 K:BB over 11.2 innings (seven appearances) with Omaha this year, and he'll provide the Royals with some bullpen depth after Mitch Spence covered four relief innings Saturday.
Will open season in minors
The Royals optioned Black to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. Black joined the Royals in a trade with San Francisco in November. He entered camp slated for a relief role and put up good numbers during Grapefruit League play, pitching eight scoreless innings with an 8:3 K:BB over six appearances. Though he'll begin the campaign in the minors, it seems likely that Black will be up with the big club at some point during the season.
