Considering the lofty expectations that surrounded Maryland at the start of the 2015-16 season, a third-place finish in the Big Ten and No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament feel like disappointments.
Nevertheless, the Terrapins, behind potential first-round draft picks Melo Trimble and Diamond Stone, undoubtedly have the talent to make a deep run in March. They’ll just need to find better consistency after closing the season with three wins in their final eight games.
Maryland’s quest for its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2003 begins against South Dakota State in what is always a dangerous 5-12 matchup. Facing the Summit League champs, who are back in the Big Dance after a two-year absence, the Terps are 9.5-point favorites.
