The passing of Johan Cryuff just before Netherlands and France kick off a friendly is sad, but the Dutch will be able to honor their football hero in appropriate fashion on Friday. Cruyff, who wore number 14 during his time in orange, will be honored with a moment of silence in the 14th minute tonight at Amsterdam Arena.
Cruyff led the Netherlands to the World Cup final in 1979, and he was just as influential as a manager as he was on the field. With both Netherlands and with Barcelona, his approach to tactics had a profound effect on the game of football. He passed away at 68 on Thursday after a battle with lung cancer.
In addition, there will be a pre-match moment of silence for the 34 victims of Tuesday’s attack in Brussels. Both teams will also wear black armbands to show respect to the victims.
