Tapwrit won the 149th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, etching its name forever into the history of thoroughbred racing.
For much of the race, the Todd Pletcher-trained horse, who was ridden by Jose Ortiz, kept pace with favorite Irish War Cry at the front of the pack. When the two horses pulled away from the field on the final stretch, Ortiz was able to guide Tapwrit around Irish War to capture the Third Jewel of the Triple Crown. Patch, the famous one-eyed horse, came in third, followed by Gormley to round out the lucrative superfecta for bettors.
