For Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, he should be fully immersed in celebrating one of the defining moments of his career with his second Masters Tournament title won earlier this month. Instead, much of the spotlight has been diverted toward the turbulence of his personal life, particularly as it pertains to his marriage to his wife, Erica Stoll.
Just two years prior to achieving his second green jacket, McIlroy initiated a brief but explosive divorce saga that has refused to die down within gossip circles and fan chatter. Even as he celebrated his Masters triumph with his wife and young daughter, Poppy, standing beside him, the pro golfer’s personal life was the focus on discourse on the sidelines as he conducted interviews with the CBS reporter with whom he allegedly had an affair around the same time as the 2024 divorce filing. If nothing else, the 2026 Masters Tournament at Augusta National only added fuel to the divorce speculation around McIlroy.

On May 13, 2024, Rory McIlroy shocked the golf world when he filed for divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll, by submitting legal documents in Palm Beach County family court. As originally reported by ESPN, court documents cited the marriage as “irretrievably broken”, bringing an abrupt halt to the seven-year marriage which had largely been viewed as one of the most stable relationships on the PGA Tour.
The divorce filing came at a particularly jarring time for the golfer as he submitted the court documents just days before the PGA Championship. This ultimately created a media storm which quickly eclipsed in his on-course performance. Almost immediately, speculation began to swirl around the potential reasons for the split, as well as the timing of the filing.
Amongst the most persistent narratives were rumors linking McIlroy to CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis, whom fans have longed believed was involved in an affair with the golfer and created the basis for his desire to separate from his wife. While no evidence ever confirmed a romantic relationship between the two, the alleged connection gained traction online and in tabloids, even resurfacing at the 2026 Masters Tournament when Balionis interviewed McIlroy during the event. Both McIlroy and Balionis have maintained that their connection is strictly professional, though fan chatter and gossip rumors have continued to swirl.
