Former Buffalo Bills receiver Stefon Diggs could return to where it all began.

Diggs remains a free agent after being cut loose by the New England Patriots not long after their run to the Super Bowl, and has yet to find a new team. One analyst believes he could make a surprise move back to his original NFL team, naming the Minnesota Vikings as a top landing spot.

Stefon Diggs Could Return to His First NFL City

Garrett Podell of CBS Sports broke down some potential landing spots for the top remaining free agents left this offseason. He noted that Diggs proved in 2025 that he was fully recovered from the knee injury that cut short his 2024 season.

“Diggs was an integral piece for the 2025 AFC champions,” Podell wrote. “At the age of 32 and fresh off a torn ACL, Diggs led the Patriots with 1,013 yards receiving and four touchdowns on 85 catches. His 83.3% catch rate was the second-highest catch rate by a wide receiver in the past 45 seasons, according to CBS Sports Research. Only New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas’ 85% catch rate in 2018 was higher than what Diggs produced in 2025.”

While Diggs is facing the uncertainty of felony charges related to an alleged assault on a former personal chef, Podell noted that if the legal process is resolved, “a homecoming to the Minnesota Vikings makes plenty of sense.”

Diggs was drafted by the Vikings in 2015, spending his first five seasons there before being traded to the Bills in 2020.

“If Diggs’ legal process is resolved, a homecoming to the Minnesota Vikings makes plenty of sense,” Podell wrote. “Jalen Nailor departed for the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, so there’s an opening at Minnesota’s WR3 spot after 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Justin Jefferson and former first-round pick Jordan Addison.”

While Diggs may harbor some bad feelings toward the Vikings after they traded him to the Bills, Podell noted that the team is under an entirely new regime and trying to recover from a “disastrous” season in 2025 with J.J. McCarthy under center.

“Providing Kyler Murray with three high-caliber wideouts would certainly be helpful toward that cause,” Podell wrote. “Plus, Diggs wouldn’t have to work as hard to get open as he ages playing alongside Jefferson and company.”

Bills Brought in More Wide Receiver Help

The Bills saw some immediate success after trading Diggs in 2024, adopting what they called an “everybody eats” approach that season to spread the targets out to a wider group of pass-catchers. The team struggled in 2025, however, with wide receivers often failing to get separation and quarterback Josh Allen facing pressure as a result.

The team brought on some help this offseason, landing DJ Moore in a trade with the Chicago Bears. The Bills could also look to bring back Brandin Cooks, who came to the team late last season as a waiver-wire addition and quickly became a top target for Allen.

Cooks remains a free agent after his contract ended, but he had expressed some interest in coming back to Buffalo and serving as a mentor to Keon Coleman.
