The New England Patriots added to the offensive line on Monday night, signing New York Jets offensive tackle Alijah Vera-Tucker to a three-year $48 million deal. The deal has a base salary of $42 million, with incentives that could end up pushing the value to 48 million. This was reported by multiple media outlets on Monday evening.

The contract itself includes $6 million in guarantees, all pending on his availability. This gives New England a starter at left tackle. The Patriots came into free agency with a goal to improve the offensive line, and Vera-Tucker could help with that.

The lineman was selected 14th overall by the Jets in the 2021 NFL draft. He was thought of as a premier talent coming out of college, with injuries being the thing that has hampered his career to this point. He has appeared in only 43 of 85 possible games in five NFL seasons.

Some of his highlights include making the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team in 2021. The lineman played in 16 games that year.

2025 was not much easier for him on the injury front. He missed the entire season after suffering a torn triceps during training camp. He also suffered a torn triceps in week seven of 2022 and a torn Achilles in 2023.

How He Could Help  New England Patriots

Vera-Tucker could help the Patriots with their offensive line in multiple ways. For one, he is versatile. He has started in four of five offensive line positions during his career. Left tackle, left guard, right guard, and right tackle are all in his repertoire.

This could bolster the Patriots’ offensive line in a big way. This will give them the flexibility on the line to be able to move Jared Wilson to center. The latter is something that was talked about over the course of the last couple of weeks. The Patriots could now have Will Campbell at left tackle, Vera-Tucker at left guard, and Wilson at center. Mike Onwenu and Morgan Moses would round out the offensive line.

A Potential High-Upside Signing For New England Patriots

This could be viewed as a high-potential signing for the Patriots. Injuries are a dominant story here. It’s important that the organization was able to put incentives in the contract, dependent on his staying healthy. The talent is definitely there. After all, he was a first-round pick coming out of college. At the very least, patriots now have a viable starter on the line, and additional veteran experience.

The team gave up 48 sacks last season. This is an improvement from the 52 sacks they gave up in 2024. Even still, depth on the line and veteran experience are needed. This is not a flashy move by any means, but it does give the Patriots additional protection for quarterback Drake Maye. The numbers were better in 2025, but there is certainly room for improvement. Vera-Tucker will hopefully be able to get back healthy and what he was towards the beginning of his career. His health will be important to the overall stability of the rest of the line.
