Coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday that most of the 49ers' starters, including Purdy, will play 1-to-2 possessions during Sunday's preseason contest versus the Saints, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. After sitting out San Francisco's exhibition opener last Saturday at Tennessee, Purdy and healthy starters like WR Deebo Samuel and TE George Kittle will be out there this weekend. However, regulars like RB Christian McCaffrey (calf) and WR Brandon Aiyuk seem unlikely to see the field Saturday, barring the latter's contract dispute receiving clarity before then. Purdy is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he completed 69 percent of his passes for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while adding 144 yards and two more scores on the ground in 16 regular-season games.

49ers Odds & Projections
Latest 49ers News
Brock Purdy : In line to suit up Sunday
Christian McCaffrey : Ramping up activity level
McCaffrey (calf) increased his activity level on the side field at practice Thursday and seems to be getting closer to a return, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. McCaffrey also ran some half-speed routes on the side Thursday, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic. The star running back is expected to sit out all of San Francisco's preseason games while he works his way back from a calf strain suffered early August, but at this point there don't seem to be any serious concerns about his Week 1 status. McCaffrey still has over three weeks to get healthy before San Francisco's regular-season opener against the Jets on Monday, Sept. 9.
Joshua Dobbs : Competing for backup role
Dobbs will compete with Brandon Allen for the No. 2 quarterback role in San Francisco this preseason, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. The 49ers' star-studded roster has created no controversy over who will start come Week 1, leaving the battle to be Brock Purdy's backup as the key competition this preseason. Dobbs performed well in the team's first preseason contest, completing 70 percent of his passes for 146 yards and a rushing touchdown. The journeyman's lone turnover came on a failed Hail Mary attempt, so we won't hold that against him. The key takeaway from Saturday's exhibition was that Dobbs entered the contest in the second half after Allen (53.8 completion percentage for 98 yards). The two veteran backups will continue to prove their worth as the start of the regular season approaches.
Brandon Aiyuk : Still talking with Niners
The 49ers are trying to work out a contract with Aiyuk but also have agreed to parameters of a trade with the Steelers, ESPN.com reports. It's the latest turn in a lengthy, ongoing drama, with ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reporting that a trade to Pittsburgh is "one phone call away." The 49ers previously discussed deals with the Browns and Patriots, but reports suggested negotiations fell through due to Aiyuk's hesitance about signing a long-term deal with either team. He's apparently willing to go to Pittsburgh, which essentially leaves everyone waiting on the 49ers to either complete a trade or meet Aiyuk's contract demands. It's possible the Steelers eventually rescind their offer if San Francisco's front office continues to drag things out with the effort to convince Aiyuk to take less than what Pittsburgh is offering.
Frank Darby : Moves to IR
Darby (undisclosed) reverted to the 49ers' reserve/injured list Tuesday after clearing waivers, per the NFL transaction log. Darby will now be forced to sit out for the 2024 season unless he reaches an injury settlement with San Francisco. The 2021 sixth-round wide receiver has played in 16 regular-season games across his three-year career as a member of the Falcons, operating mostly on special teams.
Kalia Davis : Set for extended absence
Davis is slated to have knee surgery and will miss half the 2024 campaign, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Davis played in San Francisco's preseason opener Saturday against Tennessee and recorded two tackles, including a sack. However, he suffered a knee injury in the contest and is now expected to miss extended time for the third straight season. Davis didn't play in his rookie campaign due to a knee issue and missed the final three weeks of the regular season as well as all of the playoffs last year due to an ankle injury.
Jon Feliciano : Week-to-week with knee injury
Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday that Feliciano is considered week-to-week due to knee soreness, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Feliciano did not play in Saturday's 17-13 preseason loss to the Titans. With both Feliciano and Spencer Burford (hand) on the shelf, Lombardi posits that Dominick Puni is in line to receive first-team reps at right guard.
Mitch Wishnowsky : Moves past knee issue
Wishnowsky (knee) played in Saturday's preseason opener against Tennessee. Wishnowsky missed multiple practices due to knee irritation, but he was able to take the field in the 49ers' first exhibition contest. That suggests he'll be good to go for the regular season, barring any setbacks.
