A video shared on Twitter shows Major General Issam Zahreddine of the Syrian Republican Guard touring the corpses of dozens of Islamic State militants killed in Deir ez-Zor, Syria.
Zahreddine, aka “Lion of the Republican Guard,” has been a key figure in the Syrian Civil War, leading Syrian Government forces all across Syria. He is Druze.
ISIS has held parts of Deir ez-Zor since 2014. Since then, they have been entrenched in battle with the Syrian Arab Army. Three days ago, Yahoo! News reported that SAA soldiers were “meters” away from ISIS in Deir ez-Zor. Al-Masdar News reports:
ISIS jihadists attempted to infiltrate through the eastern flank of the air base; one of the last government-held positions in the embattled northeastern city. Once the offensive is thwarted, the Syrian Army’s 104th Brigade of the Republican Guards, began a counter offensive on ISIS positions in Al-Sina’a District, Al-Taim Oilfield, al-Jafeaa village and Huwyjat Saqr, killing at least 26 ISIS jihadists and wounding many others.
It is unclear if the battle described by Al-Masdar News is the aftermath in the video shown above.
