The day has finally arrived to celebrate 100 years of Copa America, and USA can take control of Group A with a win in their first match against Colombia. The Americans will be underdogs throughout the tournament, so why not start early against the team currently ranked third in the world by FIFA.
USMNT have struggled at Copa America in the past, but the record books are meaningless as tournament hosts. What matters is that this USA squad convert chances when the opportunities arise, and develop a consistent back line against some of the world’s best attacking teams.

These teams don’t have much history, but pretty much all of it belongs to Colombia. Los Cafeteros have won four of the las six meetings, including twice at previous Copa Americas. Klinsmann’s biggest problems Friday night will be containing the speedy threats of both James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado. Klinsmann seems to have settled on a back four for the first time since the World Cup, with Brad Guzan replacing Tim Howard in goal. Fabian Johnson and DeAndre Yedlin have had some big-time experience at fullback, but they will be tested early and often Friday night.
It would not surprise me if this game played to a draw. It’s not the sexy result, but one point would be crucial for USA moving forward to Costa Rica and Paraguay. A loss could be devastating, as all four teams in Group A are capable of making strong runs in Copa America.
If Colombia scores first, they’ll pass USA into oblivion and cruise to victory. If USA can get the first goal, they can force Colombia to stretch and make things very interesting.
