While Kanye West and Taylor Swift‘s relationship was off to a rough start, the two well-known recording artists have seemingly patched things up lately.

The hoopla all started during the 2009 MTV VMAs incident “heard round the world,” in which West interrupted Swift’s “Best Female Video” award speech by saying, “Beyonce had the best video of all time.”

The 38-year-old’s public display of embarrassment dominated the music stage and left the two feuding for quite some time. However, as the years began to distance the rapper and pop singer from the controversial incident, their gloves — both pairs — stayed off for good.

Before you knew it, Swift was donning a top from Kanye’s fashion line and heels he designed for Dion Lee‘s fall presentation. Their relationship continued to flourish to the point of Swift striking a conversation with West during the 2015 Grammys.

Unfortunately, old habits don’t die easy as West took a shot at Swift on “Famous,” a track from his upcoming Life of Pablo album, with the following lyrics:

“I still think me and Taylor might have sex, I made that b**** famous.”

While the jury’s still out on how Swift will react to the controversial song in which Rihanna collaborates on, the two performance artists have certainly and inadvertently been through a lot together.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Her BFFs Were In the Audience When He Debuted The Graphic Lyrics

On February 11, West killed two birds with one stone when he entered Madison Square Garden — along with the recovering Lamar Odom — to unveil his Yeazus Season 3 clothing line via listening party for The Life of Pablo. While the special event was broadcast live on Tidal in 700 cinemas, 23 countries and select UK Vue theaters, Swift’s two best friends Jaime King and Karlie Kloss were sitting behind the Kardashians and Kenner, according to Perez Hilton. More specifically, they were close enough to hear West. Kloss could be seen in the Twitter photo above posted by model Gigi Hadid.

Despite the overwhelming support West received, there were a few celebrities that had some choice words for his lyrics.

The Bachelor producer Elan Gale thinks that Swift should reconsider her newfound friendship with Kim K‘s outspoken husband.

The Daily Show writer, Travon Free posted this response to West’s musical remarks against Swift:

Swift and West’s relationship took a serious turn for the better when he sent her white flowers, which resembled the giant wall of roses at West and Kim K’s wedding.

While taking the MTV VMAs stage in 2015, he stated — as witnessed in the above video — that he’s running for president in 2020. When Swift posted the photo of West’s flowers, she used the hashtag #KanTay2020, teasing that she wants to be his running mate.

A West-Swift friendship certainly seemed far-fetched in 2009 but the two have since buried the hatchet. However, West and Swift now not only share email addresses but they also did dinner on February 17, 2015 at the West Village, New York City restaurant, The Spotted Pig.

Swift touched on their newfound friendship to Vanity Fair for her September 2015 cover issue.

“I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with [West] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me – so it was the same issue. I became friends with Jay Z, and I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along … and then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid’s doing.”

4. They Both Expressed Interest In a Music Collaboration

During a February 2015 interview with Ryan Seacrest for On Air with Ryan Seacrest West had no qualms about his willingness to collaborate with Swift.

“Yeah. She wants to get in the studio and we definitely gonna go in it.”

On April 29, 2015, Swift addressed West’s comments to ET, complimenting him on his creativity as both a rapper and producer.

“He has said that. We’ve never been in a studio together, but, he’s got a lot of amazing ideas.”He’s one of those people that’s just like idea, idea, idea. He’s very creative and… I think we’ve talked about it but we’ve also talked about so many other things… I completely respect him as a producer. So, that’s all I know now.”

The two have yet to record a song together. Only time will tell if it will ever come to fruition.

As presenter of the Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 MTV VMAs — six years after their infamous incident — Swift has several nice things to say to West. While West sat in the audience alongside Kim K, she revealed that his debut album was the first one she ever purchased from iTunes.

“Something that you may not know is that Kanye West’s first album, “The College Dropout,” was the first album my brother and I ever bought on iTunes when I was 12 years old.”

Following her surprising confession, Swift spoke about the impact West has made in both the music and fashion industries.

“I have been a fan of his since I can remember because Kanye defines what it is to be a creative force in music, fashion and well, life.”

Swift’s admission that she listened to “College Dropout” received a slew of backlash due to the fact that Swift was 14-years-old when the album hit shelves on February 10, 2004.

One fan took to Twitter to say that she wasn’t buying Swift’s on-stage confession.

However, Calvin Harris — Swift’s boyfriend — came to her aid on August 17, 2015 after witnessing former One Direction band member Zayn Malik retweet a comment querying her authenticity.

Harris continued on the attack, defending all musicians that make a living with the monies they collect on iTunes.

Malik — who’s no stranger to Twitter feuds — told Harris that he made a fool of himself.
