Cortes went 4-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's 6-4 win against Seattle. Cortes opened the scoring for the Athletics with a 379-foot solo shot in the fourth inning. He added three singles to finish with his first career four-hit performance. Cortes didn't play much early in the campaign but has started five of the A's past six games, either in left field or right field or at DH. He rarely hits against lefties (Cortes has just two plate appearances against southpaws this season and has gone 2-for-2) but has shown himself to be very capable of hitting big-league pitching, posting a .333/.417/.548 slash line with two home runs, seven RBI and a 6:2 BB:K through 48 total plate appearances.

Carlos Cortes: Breaking News
Taking seat Sunday
Cortes is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. Cortes and fellow left-handed hitters Jeff McNeil and Lawrence Butler will hit the bench for the series finale while southpaw Noah Schultz takes the hill for the White Sox. Since Brent Rooker (oblique) landed on the injured list April 10, Cortes has gained a foothold in the Athletics' regular lineup versus right-handed pitching while shuffling between the corner-outfield spots and designated hitter.
Moves into regular role
Cortes will start at designated hitter and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Mets. Cortes will crack the Athletics lineup for the fourth time in five games, with the latter three starts coming at DH. Though the Athletics may shield Cortes from select left-handers, the 28-year-old looks as though he'll be in line for regular playing time against righties while Brent Rooker (oblique) is on the shelf. Cortes has wielded a hot bat in the early going, slashing .333/.455/.611 with three extra-base knocks in 22 plate appearances.
