The Week 9 waiver-wire rush is going to be a hectic one. With majors injuries to Le’Veon Bell and Matt Forte, among others, owners are going to be stepping on each other to try to acquire DeAngelo Williams or Jeremy Langford.

But if you miss out on either of those options, David Cobb makes for an intriguing consolation prize.

After missing the first eight weeks of the season with a calf injury, the Tennessee Titans rookie running back is eligible to return in Week 9. Expecting production right off the bat would be overly optimistic–he is reportedly “a little heavy” right now–but Cobb makes for a logical stash.

The Titans, who are 1-6 and just fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt, are in rebuild mode. Bishop Sankey and Antonio Andrews haven’t done anything to separate themselves on the depth chart, and Tennessee would be smart to see if Cobb is their running back of the future. A fifth-round pick out of Minnesota, he’s a powerful, downhill runner who would make sense as an early-down back.

Moreover, as Rotoworld’s Raymond Summerlin pointed out, the change in the coaching staff could be a good thing for Cobb:

Owners who are fighting for a playoff spot and need a more immediate-impact player may want to look elsewhere.

But if you’re sitting near the summit of your league and have available bench space, Cobb has a strong chance to be leading the Titans in carries during the latter stretch of the season. His upside is capped by a shaky offense, but if he takes the job and runs with it–a legitimate possibility considering his competition–he would be an RB2.

If you’re waiting for Cobb to produce before picking him up, you’ll be too late. Grab him now.
