Even if Chelsea loses tonight against Porto, team president Roman Abramovich has made clear that Jose Mourinho’s job is safe. It would be fitting for Mourinho to be sacked after a loss to Porto, the club with whom Mourinho made his mark on the soccer world.
Mourihno led Porto to a 2003 UEFA cup and 2004 Champions League titles, and then signed on as Chelsea manager for his first run the following season.
Chelsea currently sits atop the Group G standings. They need only a draw to secure their place in the next round, but Porto need a win. Mourinho has acknowledged that tonight is much more than a group play match.
“It’s a knockout game,” Mourinho said earlier this week. “It’s a group phase where normally you still play for points. But the reality is that it’s a knockout. Chelsea or Porto, one will be out. For sure, a big game.”
Today’s game will be available on your regional Fox Sports network in the US at 2:45 p.m. Eastern. Because of an agreement between FOX and ESPN, the game will be available on both streaming platforms (WatchESPN & Fox Sports GO).
