Barcelona are finally playing their make-up game from the Club World Cup, travelling midweek to El Molinon to take on Sporting Gijon. Barca increased their unbeaten streak to 30 games over the weekend, the longest streak in Spanish football history. Luis Enrique of course doesn’t want the streak to end, but admitted this week that if it were to end it should be to Sporting, where Enrique has been a fan since childhood.
“I hope the run doesn’t end, but if it has to come to an end then let it be at El Molinon,” Enrique told reporters this week. “I’ve been a club member since I was a kid and watched their games at the ground, with a flag made by my mum. Whenever I go back to El Molinon it’s special.”
Sporting are back in La Liga for the first time since 2012, and are fighting to stay alive at the bottom of the table. The squad is just two points above relegation after a rough stretch saw them win just once in nine games.
