Colombia may have been the darling of the 2014 World Cup, but their road to Russia in 2018 has thus far been full of bumps. Colombia is in the bottom half of CONMEBOL qualifying standings, just one point better than tonight’s opponent Bolivia. Colombia has just one point from their last three qualifying matches, most recently a shutout loss to Argentina at home.
Tonight’s winner will go a long way in determining which team will rise from the basement and qualify for the next World Cup. A win would boost Colombia to seven points, putting them even with Brazil on points but still lagging behind on goal differential. It’s safe to say tonight is a big night for both these teams.
Bolivia is by all measurements the underdog, but the squad have been playing better in their recent qualifiers. They defeated Venezuela 4-2, and led Paraguay before two goals in four minutes sunk their chances of consecutive wins. Don’t expect to see familiar faces, as manager Julio César Baldivieso has been bringing up young talent from the Bolivian youth squad.
