Chennai Super Kings fans finally have a reason to feel optimistic as an encouraging update on MS Dhoni’s injury surfaces. However, the news isn’t entirely reassuring. While his batting looks sharp in recovery, concerns remain around his match fitness, especially his running, leaving his IPL 2026 return timeline uncertain.
CSK Coach Hussey Offers Hope, But Flags Key Concern
Mike Hussey, CSK’s batting coach, provided a balanced update on Dhoni’s recovery.
“He’s progressing nicely with his rehab. And look, I’m a batting coach, and I’m happy with how he’s batting,” Hussey said.
He further highlighted the main issue delaying Dhoni’s return:
“He needs to get confidence in his running and build that speed up. I don’t know when he’ll play.”
The update makes it clear that while Dhoni’s batting rhythm is intact, his ability to run between the wickets is still a work in progress.
CSK’s Turbulent IPL 2026 Campaign
The Chennai Super Kings entered IPL 2026 looking to bounce back after a poor 2025 season, where they finished last. A revamped squad, led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, was expected to usher in a new era.
However, results have been inconsistent so far. Multiple defeats early in the season left CSK struggling to build momentum.
From an analytical standpoint, this inconsistency reflects a team in transition, balancing youth with experience but missing its most influential figure.
Life Without Dhoni is A Visible Void

Dhoni hasn’t played a single game this season due to a calf-related injury and rehab process.
Technically, CSK have good replacements on paper but the truth is that his absence is a big loss in many ways. His leadership qualities, being calm under pressure and having great tact, are things that you just can’t replace. In fact, even outside the field, his guidance to players like Noor Ahmad has been an example of the impact he has had.
To me, the biggest issue CSK is facing is not only poor performance but also a matter of identity. Lack of Dhoni means that the team is as good as a bunch of players that are still figuring out who their main man is during critical moments.
Right now, no one really knows when he will be back. Hussey even said that they didn’t really know what was going on as Dhoni had to get to a point where he felt 100% confident with running before they could even talk about him being ready for the match.
Considering the way he has been doing so far – batting nicely but still working on his fitness – it makes sense that a possible comeback may happen after CSK feel that he can sustain the full intensity of the match.
It seems very likely from what we have seen, that a return around the middle or later part of the season could happen. However, CSK’s main concern would be not to do anything that might compromise his long-term fitness since he is so important to them.
