When it comes to the sport of T20 cricket, the IPL and PSL are the cream of the crop. While the PSL is already underway, IPL fans have another day to wait before the action picks up. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening match of IPL 2026 on March 28th, 2026.
However, there is a new development regarding the opening ceremony. Here is everything that you need to know about the ceremony ahead of the 2026 IPL start date.
Is There a 2026 IPL Opening Ceremony?
The BCCI has revealed that there will be no 2026 IPL opening ceremony for this year’s tournament. The reason for it is very somber and serious.
“Due to last year’s tragic incident on June 4, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL-2026 (in Bengaluru),” Devajit Saikia of the BCCI said in a statement. “The BCCI is not organising any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL-19. As a mark of respect to the departed souls due to that tragedy on June 4, 2025.”
Despite the tragic incident, there are still plans to celebrate. These plans are for a different time and a much more appropriate setting.
What Happened on June 4th, 2025?
On June 4th, 2025, RCB celebrated their 2025 IPL victory with a parade outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This was RCB’s first IPL trophy and a momentous occasion because of it.
Surprisingly, anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 fans flooded the area to celebrate with the team. What resulted was a stampede that claimed the lives of 11 while injuring 47 others.
What Are They Doing Instead of an Opening Ceremony?
In light of this decision not to have an opening ceremony, the BCCI has decided to celebrate at a different time.
“However, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are planning a grand entertainment function at the closing of the IPL, on the day of the final (May 31),” the BCCI said.
It makes sense to pay tribute to the 11 lives that were lost in a stampede outside the stadium when RCB won their first IPL title. This gesture is one small way to do just that.
Heartfelt RCB Tribute & How They Will Honor the 11
The RCB shared a post on social media that reveals how they will commemorate the 11 people who lost their lives during the parade celebration.
“Forever in our hearts,” RCB’s post caption begins. “As a mark of respect to the 11 members of our RCB family we lost on June 4th, we have decided to permanently leave 11 seats in P1 stand unoccupied, going forward.”
“This stands as a quiet tribute to their memory and the unwavering bond they shared with the team. Once an RCBian, always an RCBian, and it holds true for our fans too.”
Additionally, the RCB squad will wear jerseys with “11” on the back during warmups. They will also wear black armbands as a tribute.
Even though the 2026 IPL season will begin on a quieter note this year, it won’t make the tournament any less entertaining. Between all of the injuries and other questions surrounding each IPL club, it’s shaping up to be a great tournament.
