While England won the first ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title, the tournament soon became dominated by Australia women’s national cricket team, which captured their first championship in 2010 and quickly built a reputation as the most consistent and powerful side in the format of T20 cricket.
Australia added more titles in 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, and 2023, thus building a dynasty that has defined the modern era of the Women’s T20 World Cup. Their success has been fueled by a generation of star players including Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, and Alyssa Healy, all of who have helped to set the standard for excellence in international women’s cricket while bringing recognition to the women’s competition in the format.
The 2020 final game was a particularly monumental match as it became a landmark moment for the sport. Played in front of a record crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia defeated the India women’s national cricket team by an astounding margin that cemented the growing dominance of their presence in the sport. But more than contest and trophies, the skill and tactical awareness of the Australia women’s national cricket team has helped to elevate all of women’s cricket across the globe and to bring further popularity to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for years to come.
