Jose Ortiz Racing in the Black-Eyed Susan & Preakness Stakes
Following Golden Tempo’s dramatic last-to-first Kentucky Derby victory, Jose Ortiz will be racing in the two big races this weekend.
For the Black-Eyed Susan, he will ride Braken Poppa. On Saturday, he hopes to steer Chip Honcho to victory.
Over the past 10 years, Ortiz has been rising through the jockey ranks. His Derby win two weeks ago was his third top-three finish at that event. He finished third in 2019 and second in 2018.
As far as the Preakness is concerned, he’s only finished in the top three on one occasion. In 2022, he finished first, riding Early Voting to victory.
Looking ahead to the Belmont Stakes, that is his most successful event of the Triple Crown. Ortiz finished second in 2018, 2019, and 2022. Additionally, he won the Belmont Stakes in 2017.
If he were to finish first on Saturday, it would be a momentous occasion for him. Ortiz has won every jewel in the Triple Crown, but never in the same year. Considering the dramatic nature of his Derby win, all eyes will be on him on Saturday.
