The Green Bay Packers have had a busier-than-expected start to the offseason. With head coach Matt LaFleur continuing to restructure his coaching staff, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the front office have begun mapping out their plans for free agency and the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
After two strong seasons working as Jordan Love‘s backup, one guy who does not appear likely to return to the team in free agency this offseason is quarterback Malik Willis. Some folks believe Willis is set to be the top player available for teams to sign in free agency, and according to recent reports, it sounds like he is due to sign a mammoth contract in the near future.
Malik Willis Set to Earn $30 Million Per Year on Next Contract
Willis was initially selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, but he didn’t get much of an opportunity to succeed during his limited time with the team. After the front office selected Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Willis ended up getting traded to the Green Bay Packers ahead of the 2024 campaign.
Over the past two seasons, Willis has flashed when he’s been called into action in place of Love. In 11 games of action, Willis has thrown for 972 yards and six touchdowns, while also rushing for 261 yards and three more scores on the ground. Perhaps most importantly, though, Willis has protected the football, throwing zero interceptions during his time with Green Bay.
While it’s a small sample size, teams across the league believe Willis is more than capable of being a full-time starter in the NFL. With there not being many top-tier quarterback options available in free agency, rumors are swirling that suggest Willis could be in line to earn a contract that will pay him over $30 million per year in free agency this offseason.
“Packers free agent QB Malik Willis is in demand, as expected, and interested teams I’ve spoken to at the Combine in Indianapolis believe him getting at least $30M per year is a foregone conclusion,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported in a post on X.

While Willis helped himself by showing out when he took the field for the Packers over the past two seasons, he also benefits from a market that features several teams looking for an immediate plug-and-play quarterback. Teams like the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals will likely be looking for new starting-caliber options, while the Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns could be aiming to add some competition to their quarterback depth chart.
From the sounds of it, Willis will have his pick of the litter when it comes to his free agency, and with several teams battling for his signature, the bidding for his services could reach figures no one could have imagined just a few months ago. With so few top-end quarterbacks available, Willis appears to be the best of the bunch, and it could lead to him earning a massive new contract when all is said and done.
