The Green Bay Packers have been thin at tight end this summer. Free agent tight end Zach Ertz had just received medical clearance for football activity after a torn ACL. So, it would only make sense that the two were put together as a suggested pairing.
Bill Huber of Packers On SI listed Ertz as the top free agent available for the team to sign.
“The Packers have some explosive players in the passing game, including, of course, premier tight end Tucker Kraft,” wrote Huber. “However, Ertz would give quarterback Jordan Love a security-blanket type of player. As it stands, who is Green Bay’s go-to receiver on third-and-5? Is there one? Ertz could quickly become that player because of his feel for the game.”
Ertz would be nearly a lock to make the roster and could carve out a role despite not being a starter.

As it stands, the Packers need to add a tight end with a chance to make the roster. Tucker Kraft is going to lead the way, but he is coming off of an ACL. So, the team is taking things easy on him this offseason, and it would be nice for Green Bay to enter the year with some depth.
Luke Musgrave has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to a neck injury. The Packers have not been open about a timetable for his return. However, there have not been many signs of Musgrave potentially returning soon.
Josh Whyle is returning from last year, but he was cut by the Titans in 2025 and had just five catches for 36 yards for the Packers. With Musgrave out, this is who Ertz would compete with for the second tight end spot.
Messaiah Swinson and Drake Dabney have gotten some hype at training camp, but that could be because they are two of the few healthy names out there. McCallan Castles, Thomas Yassmin, and Drew Biber have all been signed since training camp opened.
So, there are not many players competing with Whyle for the second tight end spot right now. Ertz could jump right in and see a role.
Packers Have a Need For Ertz
Ertz is going to be 36 years old soon, and he is coming off of a torn ACL. The bar is not super high for what the team is expecting from him. However, he did record 504 yards in 13 games during the 2025 season. So, even if he can just get back to that level, he can be a trusted piece and a solid second tight end.
Ertz would be entering his 14th NFL season. He has 11 playoff games over the course of six different trips to the playoffs. Of course, he also won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017.
His veteran presence and leadership could help the young tight end room off the field, while his ability on the field will be valued as well. It makes sense why he will be tied to the Packers in offseason discussions.
