After weeks of speculation, Washington Capitals captain and future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin announced that he was coming back for at least one more season in the NHL.

Ovechkin, who became the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history in 2025, is going to be with the Capitals for at least one more season, during which they’ll try and return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after missing out earlier this spring. Washington also has a stronger club now thanks to the acquisitions of Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, both of whom were acquired before Ovechkin announced his intentions to play at least one more year.

However, what happens after the upcoming season remains somewhat up in the air. But according to the man himself, he knows where he and his family will be living when his NHL career eventually comes to a close.

Washington Capitals Icon Alex Ovechkin Gives Insight Into His Future

During a recent conversation with a sports outlet from his native Russia, Ovechkin made it clear that he and his family intend to return to his homeland once his playing career comes to an end.

“Moscow is my hometown… It’s clear that I’ll live here. My family, loved ones, and friends are here,” he said.

Earlier in the offseason, Ovechkin put rumors of his retirement from the NHL to rest when he signed a one-year, incentive-filled contract to return to Washington for his 22nd campaign.

“I’m back!” said Ovechkin. “Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I’m healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win. I’m excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win. See you in September, DC!”

The Capitals Were Thrilled To Welcome Back Ovechkin For A 22nd Season

Naturally, the ownership and management of the Capitals were happy that the future Hall of Fame forward and longtime captain decided to return for at least one more year.

“We are excited to have Alex return and continue his illustrious career,” said MSE founder and chairman Ted Leonsis. “Ever since we drafted him, there have been two constants: his love for the game and his relentless drive to win. Alex has always shown a deep commitment to his teammates, this organization, and the fans who have supported him throughout his career. I am incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished in a Capitals sweater, and I have no doubt he will continue to add to that legacy next season. He has defined excellence for this franchise and set a standard, and we are thrilled to have him continue writing this next chapter of his remarkable career.

“Our entire organization is thrilled that Alex has decided to continue playing,” said GM Chris Patrick. “Alex has proven year after year that he can produce offensively and that he is still the driving force of our team. We are excited about the additions we made this offseason to bolster our lineup and make our group more competitive. We believe that our roster is well balanced and will help create more opportunities for Alex to create offense and score goals.  In addition, his presence in our locker room – especially with our young players – will continue to be an enormous boost for our organization and will help shape our team culture for years to come.”
