In a new video purportedly released by the Islamic State, graphic footage of the aftermath of an alleged United States coalition airstrike in “Wilayat Nineveh,” or “Ninawa,” Iraq is shown. The video was released on October 2 on ISIS terrorist channels.
Mosul has been under ISIS control since June 2014.
Reuters reports that Iraqi forces have begun operations to run ISIS out of southern Mosul. In late September, The Washington Post reported that President Obama met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to talk about the liberation of the northern side of the city, “suggesting that an American-supported, Iraqi-led attack into the city could be imminent.”
Yesterday, The Los Angeles Times reported:
Expected to commence in the coming weeks, the battle for the city of 1.2 million people, Iraq’s second-largest, is expected to send up to 1 million people fleeing for safety and help determine the future of America’s bid to contain the spread of violent Muslim extremism in the Middle East.
