Alex Wiederspiel is a Heavy contributor with a background in broadcast and digital journalism, bringing experience from both news and sports. He is an award-winning play-by-play broadcaster and radio news anchor, the current host of the Locked On Podcast Network's NHL Game Night program, a contributing writer for Yardbarker and a long-time contributing writer for the West Virginia-based statewide news outlet MetroNews.

Alex is primarily a play-by-play broadcaster, working with the USLW's Pittsburgh Riveters, West Virginia University athletics, the Mountain East Conference (NCAA DII) and freelancing for the American Collegiate Hockey Association and AAU.
In addition to his play-by-play career, Alex works as one of four hosts for the nightly recap show NHL Game Night, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. The show recaps every scheduled NHL game throughout the regular season and playoffs, and also includes offseason content.
Alex's broadcast work has been honored on four separate occasions by the West Virginia Broadcaster's Association, including being named best play-by-play in 2026. He also contributed to MetroNews' Edward R. Murrow Award-winning coverage of the deadly June 23, 2016 floods in West Virginia and the historic 2018 West Virginia Teachers' Strike.
Education
Alex was a non-traditional student who graduated from West Virginia University in 2020 with an RBA degree. He returned for additional education in Integrated Marketing Communications, graduating from WVU in 2022.
