At the 2014 Emmy Awards, Julianna Margulies is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
As the leading lady on The Good Wife, Margulies plays Alicia Florrick, an attorney rebuilding the career that she once halted to be a stay-at-home mom and politician’s wife.
Here’s what you need to know about her real life.
1. She’s Married
She married attorney Kevin Lieberthal, who she met at a party, at 41 and told Redbook, “I didn’t get married until later for a very specific reason: My parents were divorced and I never wanted to put a kid through that. I definitely met the right person, but I also think part of it is timing. I wouldn’t have been ready for the life I have now when I was 30. It’s easy to have the chocolate and poems in your life, the whirlwind romance. The hard part of life is being the person who shows up for the parent-teacher conference.”
When they met, she thought he was an actor and was convinced the relationship would not lead to anything serious.
“I said to him, ‘Listen, I’m going to be leaving in 10 minutes because I’m sure you’re an actor and I have sworn off [your type]. And he said, ‘Well, that’s good. I’m a lawyer,'” she told Good Housekeeping.
2. She’s ‘The Good Wife’
She talked about her character and why she resonates with viewers:
A good wife is someone who thinks she has done everything right: raising the kids, being there for the husband, being home, trying to do it all. Alicia was swept up in the life they led, and then she found out her husband was sleeping with someone else by reading it on a news ticker.
3. She Was Pregnant at Her Wedding
The couple has a six-year-old son Kieran.
She told Redbook, “Being a mother has made me more patient and more hyper-aware. I wasn’t someone who enjoyed being around lots of little kids before I had my son. But now I see the world through their eyes.”
Shortly after she got engaged, she found out she was pregnant.
She told Good Housekeeping, “The best day of my life was my wedding day, and I think so much of it had to do with the fact that I had our [unborn] son with me and the rabbi blessed him.”
4. Her NYC Apartment Was Featured in ‘Architectural Digest’ & Then Got Flooded
— The Good Wife (@TheGoodWife_CBS) March 17, 2014
The magazine featured a slideshow of their sleek and chic apartment in the Big Apple.
In the February 2014 issue, she said of the apartment she owned for 10 years before renovating, “I bought it thinking I’d flip it. There’s just this sense of calm here. I didn’t realize what a smart buy it was.”
Shortly after they did the article, the family went skiing and their apartment flooded while they were away.
“We walked into our brand-new apartment with this [magazine] – it was in the mail – and everything was flooded,” she says. “The whole place had completely flooded from the guy upstairs,” she told Ellen DeGeneres.
5. There’s Speculation She Had Plastic Surgery
Although people think she had work done of her face, the actress told Good Housekeeping, “I think it’s really important that when I cry, my face cries with me. And isn’t it OK to have some lines? Doesn’t it also mean I laugh a lot.”
