‘Game of Thrones’: Who Did Sam See in the Citadel’s Cell? [PHOTOS]

On the Season 7 premiere of Game of Thrones, Sam had a strange encounter at the Citadel with a man in a cell. Who was the man? If his voice sounded familiar, there was a reason. Read on for the details.

This post will have spoilers through Season 7 Episode 1.

Sam has to do all the chores that no one wants to do now that he’s at the Citadel. He doesn’t look like he’s on his way to being a Maester or having legitimate access to all those books. One of his jobs is helping the very sick, including people who are locked away in cells.

In one scene during the premiere, a man asks Sam if “she” has shown up yet. The man’s voice sounds very familiar.

The man that Sam saw at the Citadel in Old Town was Jorah Mormont. When he reaches his hand out of the cell, you can see the greyscale clearly on his arm. And he’s obviously asking if Dany has shown up yet to Westeros, because he knows she’s coming.

HBOJorah’s hand.

As you can see in the photo above, Jorah’s greyscale has clearly gotten much, much worse. But he hasn’t lost his mind. Some viewers are wondering if Jorah touched Sam, but he didn’t. He only touched the bowl.

The last time we saw Jorah, Daenerys ordered him to find a cure. This is likely why Jorah is at the Citadel. A bunch of Maesters from all over the world were able to cure Shireen. So he probably believes that going to the Citadel and being surrounded by Maesters is his best chance. They also experiment on people and try to cure illnesses there. (This is why Qyburn was kicked out — he went too far in his human experiments, but human experiments were allowed to a degree.)

By the way, if you still doubt the man was Jorah, just watch the episode on HBO Now. If you turn on subtitles, they say Jorah is speaking.

Now viewers are coming up with predictions about what that scene means. Perhaps Sam will end up discovering a cure for Greyscale. For now, it looks like he’s under quarantine until they find a cure for him.
