The White Sox placed Cannon of the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right hip inflammation. Cannon had to be pulled from Sunday's start against the Royals due to the injury in what was his first outing of the season in the majors. The injury should heal with rest, but it's unclear when Cannon might be game-ready again and it's not a given that he'll rejoin the big-league rotation when he's physically ready.
Cannon exited Sunday's contest against the Royals in the bottom of the third inning with right hip irritation, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Cannon entered the game with the White Sox up 2-0 with runners on first and second and ended up walking all three batters he faced before leaving due to the injury. The right-hander was making his first appearance of the season, and his status will likely receive an update in the near future.
The White Sox recalled Cannon from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. Right-hander Grant Taylor is slated to open the game for the White Sox, but he'll presumably be limited to an inning or two before giving way to Cannon, who is projected to work in bulk relief. Cannon will be stepping into to the rotation spot vacated by Opening Day starter Shane Smith, who was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday. Through two starts with Charlotte this season, Cannon covered 8.2 innings and struck out 10 batters while allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits and four walks.
