Joseph Wiemer: Breaking News

Wiemer (hand) was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. Wiemer suffered a hand bruise during Monday's contest against the Mets and was sent for X-rays, though his move to the minors rather than the injured list indicates it isn't a serious concern. The 27-year-old has been a surprisingly productive bat for Washington this year with a .300/.410/.529 slash line in 83 plate appearances, but he's primarily filled a part-time role and will now head to Triple-A in favor of Dylan Crews.

Wiemer is being considered day-to-day after suffering a bruised hand during Monday's game against the Mets, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. Wiemer wasn't removed from the game as a result of the injury, but he was sent for X-rays afterward, which came back negative. The team will presumably re-evaluate him Tuesday morning to determine his availability for the second game of the series.

Wiemer is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals. On the bench for the third time in four matchups versus a righty starter (Andre Pallante), the right-handed-hitting Wiemer appears as though he'll have to settle for a more of a part-time role against right-handed pitching. Wiemer is still maintaining a sizzling .476/.577/.857 slash line over 26 plate appearances on the season, but he's been much more effective against lefties (2.092 OPS) than righties (.825 OPS).
