Luis Medina: Breaking News

Medina struck out two batters and allowed one hit and one walk over a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Yankees. The Athletics called upon Medina to make a spot start last Sunday against the Padres, but he ended up serving as more of an opener for that contest, tossing just 1.1 innings before leaving the game. He's since shifted back to the bullpen and is likely to stick in a middle-relief role, even though the Athletics have a new opening in the rotation with Luis Severino (shoulder) landing on the injured list Saturday. For the season, Medina has collected one win and two holds while pitching to a 3.13 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB in 23 innings over 17 appearances.

Medina will start Sunday's game against the Padres, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Medina worked primarily as a starter over his first two MLB seasons, but he has pitched exclusively in relief so far in 2026, posting a 2.41 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB over 18.2 innings. He has maxed out at 2.2 innings in an appearance this season, so while he could eventually get stretched back out as a true starter, the right-hander figures to operate as more of an opener in San Diego. Jacob Lopez seems likely to handle the bulk of the innings behind Medina.

Medina (1-1) earned the win Thursday against Kansas City. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out one over 2.2 scoreless innings. Entering for Jeffrey Springs (hip) in the fourth inning, Medina allowed some traffic but ultimately worked a scoreless relief outing to earn his first win of the season. After primarily operating as a starter across 149.2 regular-season innings in 2023 and 2024, the right-hander has worked exclusively out of the bullpen in 2026 after missing all of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Through nine appearances, Medina owns a 2.13 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and an 11:7 K:BB across 12.2 innings.
