Luis Medina: Breaking News

The Athletics announced Monday that Medina will be part of the team's bullpen to begin the season, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Medina could merit consideration for a spot in the rotation later on in the season, but at least to begin the campaign, he'll likely operate as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. Deploying Medina in relief should allow the Athletics to better manage the right-hander's workload over the course of the campaign, after he missed all of 2025 while completing his recovery from his Aug. 6, 2024 Tommy John surgery. Medina faced no restrictions during spring training but showed shaky command in the Cactus League, allowing six earned runs on six hits while posting a 5:9 K:BB in 7.1 innings.

The Athletics are evaluating Medina for a potential Opening Day bullpen role, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. After missing the second half of 2024 and all of 2025 following Tommy John surgery, Medina made his Cactus League debut Tuesday versus the Padres. He gave up one run on two hits and a walk in one inning of work, but Medina showed he still has a big fastball, topping out at 98.9 mph on the pitch. Medina is out of minor-league options and will have workload restrictions in 2026, which prompted his shift to relief this spring. The 26-year-old could eventually return to a starter role.

Medina (elbow) will make his Cactus League debut with a relief appearance Monday against the Padres, Jason Burke of SI.com reports. It will be the first time Medina has pitched in a game since he underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2024. The 26-year-old faces an uphill battle in making the Athletics' Opening Day roster, but he should play a role with the big club this season either as a starting pitcher or reliever.
