It was founded in 1889 and was originally called Clemson Agricultural College. The college was started as an all-male military school. This was the case until 1955 when it was opened up to everyone as a traditional university. In 1964, the name was changed to Clemson University.

It has a current enrollment of 17,260 and U.S. News has Clemson as the 61st ranked national University. In 2014, the school had a 52% acceptance rate for those that applied. The school received 20,755 applications in 2014 and the average GPA of incoming freshman was 4.0.

The Clemson football team has had its best season in decades. The university last won a football national title in 1981 against Nebraska. They have not appeared in a title game since their 1981 championship prior to the 2016 game against Alabama.
