Russell Knox was in the top 10 of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass during Saturday’s third round.

He then stepped into the tee box of famous No. 17, the par 3 hole surrounded by water.

There, he did his best Roy McAvoy impression. If you haven’t seen the 1996 Kevin Costner movie “Tin Cup“, there’s a scene that went a little something like this:

Yeah. That was tough.

In the movie, Costner’s McAvoy kept going for the green shot after shot at the U.S. Open (while in contention) on a particular hole, continually hitting the water. He finally made it, but took a 12 on the hole.

But back to Knox. As Knox walked toward the green to finish the hole, the crowd roared in support. And Knox took his hiccup surprisingly well, smiling and waving to the gallery. Surprisingly well on the outside, at least.

He finished the hole with a sextuple bogey 9 on the par 3. Knox heads into Sunday’s final round in a tie for 40th at 1-under.

Knox told reporters after the round:

That was an epic fail.

In “Tin Cup,” Rene Russo’s Dr. Molly Griswold character tells Costner’s McAvoy: “Five years from now nobody will remember who won or lost, but they’re gonna remember your 12!”

Interesting. Let’s reconvene in 2021 and see what we remember most from the 2016 Players Championship.
