With the lone win in the first round of group play, Peru sit atop Group B’s standings heading into their next match against Ecuador. A 1-0 defeat over Haiti isn’t all that impressive, but Peru are focused on a bigger goal- reach the semifinals at Copa America for the second consecutive year. In a group with Brazil and Ecuador, Peru is not expected to advance.
Ecuador should have a 1-0 victory under their belt, but a disallowed goal kept their match with Brazil scoreless. Ecuador played well enough to win, and with a good result over Peru can put themselves right back in the picture to advance.
If you need a reason to watch tonight’s matchup, just look at a map. Territorial disputes between Ecuador and Peru lasted for hundreds of years, with the two nations agreeing to peace in 1999.
