With the news that Jacoby Brissett has a sprained right thumb, the Patriots are out of healthy quarterbacks. They have three quarterbacks on their roster, and all three could be unavailable for the team’s next game against Buffalo.

Instead of signing a free agent and getting him prepared in ten days, the Patriots have been preparing Julian Edelman to play quarterback. It was an insurance policy for Thursday’s win over Houston, but now it may be a necessity.

Edelman played quarterback at Kent State, making 31 starts over three seasons. Of course he was a mobile quarterback that ran for almost 2500 yards and 22 touchdowns, but he didn’t have a terrible arm. He finished his college career with a 54.5 completion percentage, with just under 5000 yards passing. His biggest problem was turnovers- he finished with 30 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.

The Patriots are getting Edelman ready to play next week, but Jimmy Garoppolo will attempt to return from a shoulder injury he suffered against Miami. The Patriots would prefer Garoppolo over Edelman, but as we saw against Houston, it really doesn’t matter who is under center for Bill Belichick’s offense.
