The Boston Red Sox have had a rollercoaster of an MLB offseason thus far. Things have not gone according to plan, but the front office is doing its best to salvage.

Entering the offseason, the clear priority for the Red Sox was to re-sign star veteran third baseman Alex Bregman. However, those dreams came to an end after Bregman decided to sign with the Chicago Cubs on a five-year, $175 million contract.

Boston has made some moves this offseason, but there is another move the team could consider making.

Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic has suggested that the Red Sox could consider revisiting trade interest in Arizona Diamondbacks star infielder Ketel Marte, even though the Diamondbacks have reportedly decided to keep him.

“The Arizona Diamondbacks had taken second baseman Ketel Marte off the trade market last week, per (Ken) Rosenthal, but that was before the Red Sox signed Suárez and now have more flexibility to trade a starter,” McCaffrey wrote. “The Red Sox could entice Arizona with a bigger trade package. (Arizona is known to covet Jarren Duran and Payton Tolle or Connelly Early.)”

Ketel Marte Would Be a Huge Addition for the Boston Red Sox

Marte has been a high-impact player over the last three years. He has been a consistent producer as well during that time frame.

Last season, Marte played in 126 games with Arizona, hitting 28 home runs to go along with 72 RBI and a slash line of .283/.376/.517.  In 2024, he hit 36 home runs and drove in 95 RBI and in 2023 he hit 25 home runs to go along with 82 RBI.

To get him, Boston would have to give up a lot of value. However, he’s the kind of player who could make a major impact and lead the Red Sox closer to contention now.

Whether or not Boston will pursue Marte remains to be seen. The other big question has to do with the Diamondbacks’ willingness to move him.

What Have the Red Sox Done This Offseason?

Losing Bregman was a tough blow for the team’s offseason plans. Since that loss, the Red Sox have done everything possible to salvage their ability to compete in 2026.

Ranger Suarez was a big free agency addition and will be a big part of the Boston rotation. He was given a lucrative five-year, $130 million contract.

Recently, the Red Sox have been connected as a potential landing spots for free agent third baseman Eugenio Suarez. There is no telling if they’ll get something done with him or not.

Marte would be a big step towards replacing Bregman. His bat would be able to replace Bregman’s production, but the loss of Bregman in the clubhouse will be difficult to fill.

That being said, if Boston wants to be a World Series contender, the front office will need to get busy. Marte would be a nice step in the right direction.

Expect to hear more rumors about the Red Sox in the near future. For now, Marte could be a name that Boston shows interest in to improve the infield.
