The 2026 season has been a complete nightmare for the Boston Red Sox early on. At the time of this writing, the Red Sox have a 10-17 record and are at the bottom of the American League East standings. Due to how poorly the Red Sox have played, they also recently ++++++++++fired manager Alex Cora and parted ways with multiple other coaches.

With this, there is no question that the start of the season has been a disaster for the Red Sox. If they hope to have any chance of fixing it, they should be aggressively looking to bolster their roster.

One specific roster need that the Red Sox have is another impactful starting pitcher. Their rotation could use a real boost, and the Red Sox are now being viewed as a potential landing spot for one of baseball’s best trade candidates because of it.

Boston Red Sox Named Top Potential Landing Spot for Marlins Ace Sandy Alcantara

In a recent article for Sports Illustrated, Patrick McAvoy took a look at five MLB trade candidates during the early stages of the season. Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara made the cut, and it is understandable when noting that he has been in the rumor mill for a long time now.

McAvoy also then named the Red Sox as among the top potential landing spots for Alcantara if the Marlins decide to deal him.

“Sandy Alcántara has been phenomenal this season. If the Marlins opt to trade him, someone is going to get a star,” McAvoy wrote. “Potential Landing Spots: Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees.”

With the Red Sox in need of a major boost right now, it would be significant if they struck a deal with the Marlins for Alcantara. The former Cy Young Award winner would form a strong one-two punch with Garrett Crochet at the top of the rotation and would give the Red Sox another star pitcher to work with.

In six games so far this season with the Marlins, Alcantara is sporting a 3-2 record, a 3.05 ERA, and 27 strikeouts. With numbers like these, the two-time All-Star is having himself a nice bounce-back year and would greatly improve the Red Sox’s rotation if successfully acquired.

Red Sox Will Have Plenty of Competition for Alcantara If They Target Him

With Alcantara being one of the best pitchers in the rumor mill early on this season, there is no question that the Red Sox would have a ton of competition to try to land him. It is understandable, as Alcantara is a high-impact starter who already has a Cy Young Award on his resume.

However, with the Red Sox needing to improve their starting rotation, it would still make a lot of sense for them to enter the sweepstakes for Alcantara. He would be a perfect fit on their roster and could be exactly the kind of pitcher that gets Boston to head back into the right direction after their poor start to the season. Let’s see if they target him from here.
