The Philadelphia Phillies had a strong 2025 regular season, as they finished the campaign with a 96-66 record. However, they once again fell short in the playoffs, as they fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS in four games. With this, it was another frustrating postseason for the Phillies.
In response to their short playoff run, the Phillies made multiple moves during the offseason. Their biggest move was re-signing star slugger Kyle Schwarber to a five-year contract. They also brought in multiple new players, which include Brad Keller, Adolis Garcia, Jonathan Bowlan, and Kyle Backhus. They also re-signed veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto to a three-year contract in free agency.
With this, the Phillies had a pretty busy offseason. However, at the same time, it is apparent that they could use another impactful outfielder on their roster. Because of this, they are now being linked to a notable trade candidate outfielder on the Boston Red Sox.
Phillies Named Potential Landing Spot for Red Sox Outfielder Wilyer Abreu
In a recent article for CBS Sports, Mike Axisa took a look at a handful of trade candidates for the 2026 MLB trade deadline. Among the players who were mentioned was Boston Red Sox slugger Wilyer Abreu due to the AL East club’s surplus of MLB-caliber outfielders.
“At some point, the Red Sox will move one of their lefty hitting outfielders, right? Roman Anthony isn’t going anywhere and Masataka Yoshida’s contract will be difficult to move, leaving Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran as the obvious trade candidates,” Axisa wrote. “There’s nothing wrong with having too many good outfielders. It does feel like there is a move to be made here though, something that creates a more balanced Red Sox roster and unclogs the outfield logjam.”
Axisa then listed the Phillies among the potential landing spots for Abreu if the Red Sox make him available.
When looking at the Phillies’ current roster, there is no question that they could use an outfielder like Abreu. This is because the 26-year-old has shown early on in his career that he can make an impact at both the plate and in the field. This is made apparent by his back-to-back Gold Glove Award wins and career-high 22 home runs this past season.
Furthermore, with Abreu still in the earlier stages of his career, the potential for him to hit a new level is there. He has shown a lot of promise early on in his career and could thrive in a more significant role on the Phillies.
Phillies Would Have Competition to Land Abreu if Red Sox Shop Him
While the Phillies stand out as a good potential fit for Abreu, the same could be said for several other teams. Teams are always on the hunt for outfielders who provide a nice mix of power and good fielding, so Abreu would be a hot commodity if the Red Sox end up shopping him this season.
Yet, with the Phillies in need of a boost in their outfield, it would make a lot of sense if they made a big push for Abreu.
